Indian Railways Overhauls Tatkal Ticket Rules: OTP Now Mandatory at Counters from July 15

In a significant move to bring more transparency to the Tatkal ticket booking system, Indian Railways is set to implement fresh rules that will take effect from 15 July 2025. The overhaul targets long-standing irregularities in both online and offline Tatkal bookings and introduces mandatory OTP-based authentication even at physical railway counters.

Why This Change Matters

For years, the Tatkal ticket booking system — designed for last-minute travel — has been plagued by manipulation, particularly by touts and booking agents using unfair means to grab tickets in bulk. The new measures are Railway’s firm step towards closing these loopholes and ensuring that genuine passengers have a fair chance at securing tickets.

New OTP Rule for Counter Bookings

Starting 15 July, passengers booking Tatkal tickets directly from railway counters will now be required to verify their identity using an OTP (One-Time Password). Here’s how the process will work:

  • When you approach the railway counter to book a Tatkal ticket, your mobile number will be recorded.

  • An OTP will be sent to your phone, which you must share with the booking clerk.

  • Only after successful OTP verification will your ticket be issued.

This rule aims to prevent bulk or fraudulent bookings at counters and aligns offline booking security with online standards.

Stricter Timings for Agents

Booking agents will also face stricter guidelines. They will no longer be allowed to book Tatkal tickets as soon as the window opens. Instead:

  • For AC classes, agents can book tickets only after 10:30 AM (the AC Tatkal window opens at 10:00 AM).

  • For non-AC classes, agents can book tickets only after 11:30 AM (non-AC Tatkal window opens at 11:00 AM).

  • OTP verification will be mandatory for agent bookings as well.

This staggered approach gives regular passengers a 30-minute head start over agents, reducing the likelihood of instant sellouts through bulk bookings.

Aadhar Authentication for Online Bookings

Indian Railways has also made Aadhaar authentication compulsory for booking Tatkal tickets online via IRCTC. This measure adds an extra layer of security and discourages the use of fake identities or unauthorized booking scripts that have been misused in the past.

What This Means for You

If you’re planning a last-minute train journey and rely on Tatkal tickets:

  • Keep your mobile phone handy and ensure it is active to receive OTPs.

  • Book early to beat the rush — especially now that agents can only book after a delay.

  • Link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account if you prefer booking online.

These rule changes reflect the Indian Railways’ renewed focus on fair access, transparency, and passenger convenience. With OTP verification becoming the new norm across platforms, the Tatkal system is poised to become more secure and equitable for all.
